The basic tools you’ll need are a\u00a0computer with internet access. If you\u00a0want to\u00a0try to organize a festival, you will also need\u00a0a\u00a0place to screen films, together with a projector, screen, DVD player or computer, and powerful\u00a0speakers.<\/p>\n

Applying to\u00a0film festivals<\/h3>\n

Preparing your movie to be screened at\u00a0a festival means extra work, but taking part\u00a0is a great way to\u00a0meet other film makers. It’s also a chance to get the attention of\u00a0producers and possible future partners, even if you don’t\u00a0win any awards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many festivals also offer lectures, workshops and discussions on\u00a0topics related\u00a0to film.<\/span><\/p>\n

Steps for applying:<\/p>\n

  1. Select the film festivals where you want\u00a0to screen your\u00a0work, and see if the film\u00a0is a good match for them. Study the\u00a0terms and conditions \u2013\u00a0each festival has their own. Note any\u00a0application deadlines.<\/li>\n
  2. Fill in the application form, giving all the required information. This will usually include a short description of the film and crew. You may have to include\u00a0images\u00a0from the movie\u00a0and encode\u00a0the film\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0specific format. Subtitles (usually in English) are often required for non-English-language films at international film festivals.<\/li>\n
  3. Send the film,\u00a0and wait for a response.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You may\u00a0have to re-edit your film to satisfy the\u00a0festival’s conditions. This can include\u00a0 shortening it slightly or adding a scene or two.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Check the website of the festival in more in detail and see what\u00a0movies were screened the previous\u00a0year or won prizes.<\/p>\n

    Some festivals have a competition section and a screening section. Some invite film-makers\u00a0and\/or their crew, and cover their accommodation and\/or travel costs. Think about whether you can\u00a0attend the festival where your film is\u00a0being screened and cover your\u00a0costs\u00a0if the festival won’t.<\/p>\n

    Festivals are divided into various\u00a0categories. There are festivals for young film makers, documentaries, low-budget films, short feature films and animation; there are also festivals by topic, including\u00a0mountains, sports and dance. Some festivals are big, with prizes and a large\u00a0audience, while others are small\u00a0and local.<\/p>\n

    There are many established festivals, showing both\u00a0amateur and professional films. P<\/span>roductions are\u00a0usually expected to be of very high quality, so some experience in film-making is necessary to succeed.<\/p>\n

    Established film festivals\u00a0are a good starting\u00a0point for young but experienced film-makers. You can get attention and feedback, and discover\u00a0new partners and opportunities.<\/p>\n

    Youth film festivals<\/h3>\n

    Youth film festivals are divided into those showing\u00a0professional films about<\/em> young people,\u00a0and festivals for films made by<\/em> young people.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Festivals for films by young young people offer plenty of\u00a0\u00a0opportunities for young film makers to screen their productions. They are not as\u00a0strict about the level of the production,\u00a0and are a chance to\u00a0show your\u00a0work and get some experience.<\/p>\n

    Independent film festivals<\/h3>\n

    Independent festivals screen productions that aren’t part of the main stream, including\u00a0guerrilla, experimental and art film.<\/p>\n

    Guerrilla film-making is usually done on a\u00a0low budget, with a small crew, on real locations and without obtaining permissions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Online film festivals<\/h3>\n

    In the digital age, you don’t always have to physically travel to film festivals because some exist entirely online. The films are available to watch over\u00a0a certain period, and viewers can vote on the films they’ve seen.<\/p>\n

    There are many more types of film festivals. You can find them by search online.<\/p>\n

    Organising a film festival or screening<\/h3>\n

    Can’t find the sort of film festival you’re looking for, or they won’t accept your film? Don’t be discouraged \u2013 you can still organise\u00a0your own film festival or screening! This is another great way of sharing your film with others.<\/p>\n

    Here’s how to get\u00a0started:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Define the following parameters for the movies you want to invite to your festival or screening: area\u00a0(local, national, international), type\u00a0of production (youth, independent etc), topic (cultural, social, sport, etc), length (90 seconds, short, full length, etc) and format (feature, documentary, music, etc).<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Think about what resources and services you’ll need: a project team, place for screening, design and print of promotional m<\/span>aterial, budget, travel and accommodation for invited guests, etc.<\/li>\n
    3. Create a website with all the necessary information about your festival. You might want to\u00a0include a platform for uploading movies and other film details.<\/li>\n
    4. Send out an\u00a0open call for films. You could use a short video for this. <\/span>Spread the word through a mailing list, social networks and any other appropriate channels.<\/li>\n
    5. Try to get\u00a0the media to report on\u00a0your festival. Start at least three months earlier by sending press releases – for example to regional newspapers or websites focusing on specific\u00a0film formats. Promote your event through\u00a0posters, flyers, and other printed materials. You could even\u00a0organise a press conference.<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. Make a pre-selection of submitted films. You could form a\u00a0selection team to help you.<\/li>\n
    7. Organize the event. This will involve booking\u00a0the place and the screening equipment, dividing\u00a0tasks between members of your team, forming a jury, printing screening schedules and\u00a0programmes, finding prizes, and providing accommodation and food for invited guests.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Ask your local youth center, community or cinema for partnership and support, and try to find sponsors. Don’t forget to invite media to the festival\/screening itself!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      Open calls for films<\/h3>\n

      From time to time different organizations announce an open call for films on a specific topic. This can relate to environmental, political, social, cultural and many other issues. All kinds of\u00a0filmmakers are invited to\u00a0submit their work. The best films often receive a prize and may\u00a0be\u00a0used by the organisers in\u00a0their campaigns and promotions.<\/p>\n
