You\u00a0can also use them to introduce\u00a0an alternative\u00a0time perspective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Aim to combine types of framing\u00a0that are neither\u00a0too similar nor too different. The framing of adjacent\u00a0shots should be at least two &#8217;sizes&#8216; apart in order to provide new information. At the same time, the\u00a0difference shouldn\u2019t be too extreme, unless you\u00a0want to shock the audience. Neither\u00a0should be visible\u00a0to the audience; viewers\u00a0should be so emotionally involved\u00a0in the story that they don&#8217;t notice the switch from one shot to another.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Film-editing programs offer various types of transition between shots\u00a0\u2013\u00a0including cross-dissolve and picture push\u00a0\u2013\u00a0although cuts in feature and documentary films are mostly clear. Over the years film-makers have worked out how to combine shots in ways that are unnoticeable to viewers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Creating a film space<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the process of\u00a0editing you\u00a0can create a new space \u2013\u00a0one that\u00a0doesn\u2019t actually\u00a0exist in the real\u00a0world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you&#8217;ve\u00a0seen a film\u00a0where all of the\u00a0action took\u00a0place at\u00a0the same\u00a0house, there is a big chance\u00a0that indoor\u00a0scenes were\u00a0actually filmed in several different\u00a0houses or film studios.\u00a0But the viewer\u00a0assumes everything was filmed at\u00a0the house they\u00a0saw in\u00a0the first shot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This can be extended to\u00a0shots\u00a0taken in different parts of a\u00a0city or in different countries. You could \u2018fake\u2019 a setting: a film showing\u00a0the American Wild West\u00a0could be filmed in Spain. Or you could\u00a0use your imagination to design an entirely new environment and film a scene set in\u00a0the future or on another planet. The use of\u00a0different framing will help you show the space or situation from lots of different angles and in as much detail as you want.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Point\u00a0of view<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The point\u00a0of view of the people or characters in the film is one of the key ways of defining the\u00a0place where the story\u00a0is happening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If we see a person\u00a0looking in a particular\u00a0direction in one scene, we assume that the next scene gives us that point of view \u2013 that is, the thing the person is looking at. Even if the second\u00a0scene wasn&#8217;t filmed\u00a0at the same location, to the viewer it\u00a0will appear as if it was. You could\u00a0even include additional\u00a0material\u00a0between shots. That way an event that lasts just a few\u00a0seconds in real life can last a minute or longer in a film.\u00a0This method is commonly used in sports TV programmes \u2013\u00a0for\u00a0example a goal shown from different angles, perhaps in\u00a0slow motion, and\u00a0interjected with\u00a0the reactions of people\u00a0(coach, fans, team players).<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chronological order, flashback and flashforward<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Events in a movie don\u2019t have to be presented\u00a0in a chronological order. You can\u00a0start at the end and work your way back to\u00a0the beginning, or combine\u00a0different time periods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0flashback is a device often used in films to take the story\u00a0back in time from the current\u00a0point. In turn, a flash-forward is used to\u00a0show an image\u00a0of the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">More obvious types of transition \u2013\u00a0like cross-dissolve or another overflow \u2013\u00a0can be used here to show that the time perspective has changed. They can also introduce a\u00a0dream scene, for example.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Film time and filming plan<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The concept of film time means you can prepare a\u00a0filming plan that\u00a0minimises organisational efforts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Scenes don&#8217;t have to be shot in the\u00a0order dictated by the story. The action in a\u00a0particular scene\u00a0can be edited into the film\u00a0as if it was happening at the same time as, or before, a scene that was shot days or months earlier.\u00a0Scenes showing events that take place\u00a0at different points in the plot can be\u00a0shot on\u00a0the same day \u2013\u00a0for example if both happen\u00a0at the same location.\u00a0In the case of feature films,\u00a0this means that\u00a0actors may have to perform at different stages of their character&#8217;s development in a single day.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Continuity of movement and props<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As we&#8217;ve discussed, a single scene\u00a0is usually made up of several\u00a0shots that show an\u00a0event from different angles, using\u00a0different framing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To make sure the audience can follow the story, it&#8217;s crucial\u00a0that the direction of action is consistent\u00a0through all the shots\u00a0in the scene, and that you\u00a0pay attention to\u00a0detail.
