  1. Decide\u00a0what\u00a0sound you’ll need at the script-writing stage. This can include dialogue, music, ambient\u00a0sound and special effects. Think about how you will create or source\u00a0these sounds.<\/li>\n
  2. When you record sound, always point the\u00a0microphone or recording device at\u00a0the sound source. Alternatively, place it in the middle of\u00a0several sound sources according to the polar pattern of the microphone.<\/li>\n
  3. Always carry earphones with you so you can check the sound quality\u00a0on the spot.<\/li>\n
  4. Learn how to check the sound levels on your camera. You also need to know how to adjust the gain or put it into automatic adjustment mode. Be careful not to exceed the maximum level of 0 dB (analogue devices) or -9 db (digital devices).<\/li>\n

Equipment and tools<\/h2>\n

Basic sound effects and general sound can be recorded on your video-making device (camera, photo camera, mobile phone, etc). For more advanced recording of sound, you will need different types of microphone, audio recording devices and accessories, including a computer and boom pole.<\/p>\n

Although the earliest\u00a0films had no\u00a0sound, screenings\u00a0were accompanied by live music\u00a0almost from day one. This usually\u00a0involved a musician\u00a0playing\u00a0the\u00a0piano, violin or guitar, though some cinemas used\u00a0entire orchestras.<\/p>\n

Sound was first recorded in 1927, and since then film-makers have used it\u00a0in various ways. Some have\u00a0even claimed that achieving good sound is half the battle when making a film. All video-recording devices nowadays have a built-in microphone. Sound recorded in this way can be used for general ambience, but it’s not usually suitable for recording dialogues or interviews. The problem is that, if you\u00a0want to amplify the voice at the editing stage, you are\u00a0boosting the ambient sound too. This makes\u00a0dialogues or interviews incomprehensible.<\/p>\n
