Introduction<\/h2>\n

From feature films and documentaries to scripted reality-TV shows, every film and video tries to tell a story.<\/p>\n

In this chapter you’ll learn how to write a synopsis and how to develop a script or a storyboard for your video project \u2013\u00a0the basis of\u00a0all good film productions.\u00a0You’ll also find out\u00a0about putting together a shooting schedule to help you at the filming stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

  1. Decide what\u00a0type of film or video you want to make (see the options under the\u00a0‚Choose your format of expression‘ drop-down menu), then write a synopsis and script.<\/li>\n
  2. Draw a detailed storyboard scene by scene (or, if you’re keen, shot by shot) based on your script.<\/li>\n
  3. Discuss your synopsis, script and storyboard with colleagues and\u00a0friends.<\/li>\n
  4. ‚Kill your idols!‘: Don’t hesitate\u00a0to make changes to your plan if, during the shoot, it turns out that a particular idea doesn’t make sense anymore. For example, you might have planned to use a drone for a beautiful\u00a0sweeping shot at the end of a scene, but it’s more important to focus on the character and their state of mind.<\/li>\n
  5. Remember the axis of action. Check if\u00a0transitions between shots\u00a0and scenes work\u00a0well.<\/li>\n
  6. Number each scene of your storyboard, and use these numbers in your shooting schedule.<\/li>\n
  7. Write a shooting schedule with your team\u00a0and remember to think about the key points mentioned\u00a0in this chapter.<\/li>\n
  8. Discuss\u00a0your progress\u00a0with colleagues regularly, from the initial idea right through\u00a0to shooting the film. Communication and team work are key for\u00a0a smooth production process and a good\u00a0film.<\/li>\n
  9. Be clear about what you want to achieve, and how. It’s also important to be\u00a0realistic throughout the project\u00a0about the time,\u00a0money and motivation you have!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n

Equipment and tools<\/h2>\n

You’ll need something to make notes with.\u00a0This could be\u00a0a\u00a0pen and paper, computer, tablet, or a combination of these.<\/p>\n

For example, if you write your script on\u00a0a computer, you can share the\u00a0electronic document with people who are not where you are. But you might find that pen and paper are best\u00a0when you’re drawing\u00a0a storyboard.<\/p>\n

At the heart\u00a0of every film is the story you want to tell.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0might be a story that already exists in some form \u2013\u00a0for example as a written text or a radio play. Or it might be written specially for your\u00a0film. In the case of documentaries, the story could even develop during the shoot itself.<\/p>\n

Including drama in the narrative\u00a0\u2013\u00a0conflicts and contrast between characters, unexpected events, extreme emotion \u2013 can make the story\u00a0more interesting. The less predictable the\u00a0outcome, the more\u00a0dramatic the story.<\/p>\n
