Other\u00a0equipment such as a Steadicam can also help but isn&#8217;t necessary.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Main section<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Different types of camera<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You\u00a0can record videos using\u00a0all sorts of\u00a0devices. Which one you\u00a0choose depends on the\u00a0kind of video you\u00a0want to make, the\u00a0equipment you have\u00a0and your\u00a0technical knowledge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Advanced equipment gives you the chance to experiment and be\u00a0more creative. They\u00a0were short and mostly reflected daily situations (for example\u00a0<i>Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory 1895,\u00a0<\/i>46 seconds, and\u00a0<i>T<\/i><i>he Arrival of the Mail Train<\/i><i> 1895<\/i>, 50 seconds\u00a0<i>\u2013 <\/i>both by the Lumi\u00e8re\u00a0brothers)<i>.<\/i>\u00a0In the\u00a0years that followed, innovative men and women developed more sophisticated ways of filming to\u00a0involve\u00a0audiences\u00a0emotionally and help them understand complex stories.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Framing for film<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The use of different types of framing is a basic method of telling\u00a0stories in all of their complexity. The aim\u00a0is to draw the audience&#8217;s attention to what we want to show, explain situations and heighten\u00a0emotion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Framing can be used in all kinds of video to make them more interesting. Using the correct\u00a0terminology is also important\u00a0when you prepare\u00a0a\u00a0filming plan and discuss\u00a0the picture with other people in the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The starting point\u00a0for framing is the human figure. The wider the framing, the more the audience&#8217;s attention is drawn to the setting\u00a0and the position of your\u00a0subject in it. The narrower the framing, the more we\u00a0focus on the subject\u2019s feelings or condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Different film schools use different terms\u00a0for types of\u00a0framing. The terms\u00a0below have been specially\u00a0chosen\u00a0for this guide. We feel they are more user-friendly and intuitive than some of the terminology you might see elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Whatever the naming convention, the\u00a0important thing is to be able to recognise the different framing types, understand what they do, and learn how best to combine them.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Types of framing<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Total<\/strong>: the whole human figure is in the shot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are\u00a0three sub-groups:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Wide total<\/strong>:\u00a0the person is a small dot in the picture; Camera stabilisers help you shoot a smooth picture even when you&#8217;re\u00a0moving with the camera (for example running or walking on\u00a0uneven ground).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The design of the device reduces\u00a0the jolts and shakes that are usually visible on a\u00a0picture made with a hand-held camera. Steadicams are widely used by professional film-makers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Most consumer cameras have a built-in adjustment mechanism to compensate for\u00a0shaking. You can turn this function on from the menu,\u00a0but bear in mind that it doesn&#8217;t have the same effect as a professional camera stabiliser.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Crane<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A crane can be used to lift the camera up so you\u00a0can shoot high above the ground. Bigger cranes can lift the camera operator as well, or you can operate the camera\u00a0from below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cranes are mostly used on film\u00a0sets or for big shows on TV like Eurovision. For low-budget productions you\u00a0can rent a\u00a0smaller.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Remote-controlled multicopters (drones)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Drones\u00a0can lift the camera very high above\u00a0the ground. There are also &#8218;do it yourselves&#8216; tutorials for building\u00a0your own equipment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Feel free to research and experiment, and use whatever helps you get the effect you want.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Common mistakes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Use of camera<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The resolution is too low and the\u00a0picture quality is poor.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Shooting with inconsistent aspect\u00a0ratio, quality and frame size. This leads to\u00a0extra work in post-production, or incompatible shots.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Framing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">The\u00a0framing\u00a0isn&#8217;t defined well (for example a person&#8217;s forehead is cut off), a shot is at an\u00a0angle, or there is\u00a0too much space above the head \/ below the feet of the subject (see\u00a0<a title=\"Composition and color\" href=\"https:\/\/vision.wettintv.de\/?page_id=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Composition and color<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Camera angles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">The height of the camera suits the camera\u00a0operator and\u00a0not the subject! Placing\u00a0the camera at your own\u00a0eye level is natural, but sometimes you have to crouch or climb higher to get a good shot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Camera movement \u2013\u00a0pan\/tilt<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Searching for the best composition at the end of a pan or tilt. This means moving the camera back and forth indecisively. To avoid this, make a test shot before you start filming.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Stopping or slowing down the pan \/ tilt in the middle, then continuing.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Making unplanned movements (for example zooming) at the same time as panning\/tilting. This affects your shot\u00a0composition.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Panning and tilting\u00a0at the same time. Check what shots you&#8217;ve made and see if you can find any of the above\u00a0mistakes. One photo for each emotion is\u00a0enough, but use a variety of\u00a0framing\u00a0\u2013\u00a0total for one emotion, waist\u00a0for the next, close-up for the third, etc.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Make a video collage (see <a title=\"Making a video collage\" href=\"https:\/\/vision.wettintv.de\/?page_id=916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Making a video collage<\/a>) about your city or organisation. You can use the different framing types more than once \u2013 for example include several total shots, several detail shots, etc. Edit your clips\u00a0&#8218;in-camera&#8216; \u2013\u00a0this means starting to make a combination of the shots while\u00a0you&#8217;re still shooting. You could\u00a0start with totals, continue with middle shots, go to details, come back to middle shots and then totals again.
