Composition is the arrangement of objects in the picture. In this chapter you’ll find out\u00a0how to arrange\u00a0your picture to achieve\u00a0a specific effect. You’ll also learn\u00a0how to use colour and light to create a particular\u00a0atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Think about\u00a0the\u00a0following when you shoot\u00a0your film:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Composition: use central composition, rule of thirds or diagonals to make your picture balanced.<\/li>\n
  2. Remember the rule of thirds when shooting dialogue scenes.<\/li>\n
  3. Colours and light: find locations with appropriate colours and light to create\u00a0the atmosphere you want. Use your instinct.<\/li>\n
  4. Common mistakes:\n
      \n
    • leaving too much space around your subject\u00a0(for example above the head)<\/li>\n
    • verticals and horizontals aren’t aligned (unless you want them misaligned)<\/li>\n
    • the edges of the frame aren’t clear and there are oddly cut objects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n

Equipment and tools<\/h2>\n

The basic equipment you need to do the exercises in\u00a0this chapter\u00a0is a camera. A tripod and some additional lights will help if you want to\u00a0experiment a bit further.<\/p>\n

Main section<\/b><\/h2>\n

The aim of good composition is to help the audience understand\u00a0the picture. Composition in photography and other visual arts can be a great inspiration in\u00a0composing video frames.<\/p>\n

Static shots \u2013\u00a0where there is no camera movement \u2013\u00a0are\u00a0easier to compose; you have more time to plan your picture\u00a0carefully. It’s harder to control the composition of\u00a0dynamic shots with a lot of camera movement.<\/p>\n

Complex shots need to be \u00a0longer, to give\u00a0the audience enough time to recognise all the elements in the picture. Shots with a simple\u00a0composition\u00a0and\u00a0few elements can be shorter.<\/p>\n

As well as\u00a0arranging the\u00a0elements\u00a0in\u00a0your\u00a0picture in a particular way, you can\u00a0use colour, light and different lenses to achieve a\u00a0specific\u00a0effect with your shot.<\/p>\n
